Our name "ila" (ഇല) means "leaf" in Malayalam — a symbol of nature's quiet, enduring intelligence. Every product we create honors this intelligence, drawing from Kerala's rich heritage of herbal healing and temple rituals.

It Began in Worship

Temples were never without flowers, leaves, oils, and herbs, offered not just for beauty but for their subtle medicinal power. What was placed before the gods was also meant to nourish the human body. As a Temple Researcher and student of Tantra, I spent years studying how these substances were chosen, prepared, and honoured. What we call offerings are not symbolic; they are among the most potent plant allies in traditional wellness.
Between 2020 and 2023, that knowledge moved from study into lived experience. Confined indoors, I felt my body change: thinning hair, dull skin, and a quiet disconnection from self. I returned to the oils my mother once prepared, to Ayurvedic texts, and after months of trial formulations, I created Ila's first product: a botanical hair oil. It worked, first for me, then for hundreds who wrote back saying they felt restored, not only in appearance but in confidence.
I realised then that caring for the body is not indulgence; it is reverence. I trained formally in cosmetic formulation and collaborated with Ayurvedic physicians, aromatherapists, and chemists. Slowly, ila expanded into creams, balms, serums, and baby oils — still crafted in small batches with purity, patience, and śraddhā: the union of attention, devotion, and care.

An Ancient City of Royal Influence
ila works from Thiruvananthapuram, an ancient city shaped by royal influence, where personal care evolved alongside ritual, medicine, and daily life. Here, oils were pressed, herbs prepared, and lepanams made as part of everyday discipline.
We responsibly source coconut oil, nellikka, vetiver, red sandalwood, neem, kokum, and turmeric from the Western Ghats and Wayanad. Each ingredient is handled with care, prepared simply, and packed in glass — because what comes from the land deserves to be preserved with respect.
